Impressed current rectifiers are essential components of current cathodic protection systems. They are designed to provide a continuous direct current to the underground structures, such as storage tanks or pipelines, which helps to prevent corrosion. The continuous operation of impressed current rectifiers is crucial because they actively drive the protective current into the metal surfaces that need protection. This ongoing current flow allows for the effective mitigation of corrosion by ensuring that the protective potential is maintained at all times.

In contrast, passive systems do not require a continuous power supply and rely on sacrificial anodes, which naturally corrode instead of the protected steel, but will eventually deplete over time. Magnetic systems are not commonly recognized as a standard type of cathodic protection. Cathodic corrosion systems is a term that lacks specificity in this context and doesn't accurately describe a type of system. Therefore, the requirement for continuous power in impressed current rectifiers distinguishes them as a vital aspect of effective cathodic protection strategies.
